The Recurrence of Totemism in Childhood
We need not be concerned that psychoanalysis, the first discipline to uncover the regular over-determination of psychical acts and formations, will be tempted to trace something so complicated as religion back to a single origin. When, out of duty or necessity, it wishes to bring a single one of the wellsprings of this institution to light, it does not claim that it is exclusive or that it occupies the first rank among the other factors. Only a synthesis of various areas of research can decide what relative significance should be assigned to the mechanism under discussion here in the genesis of religion; but such a task exceeds both the scope and the aims of the psychoanalyst.
